Bridge Pier Relocation

The 1-190 ATS Bridge Relocation Project at O'Hare International Airport was completed on November 15, 2014 ahead of schedule. Rossi wishes to thank everyone connected with this project for a timely and professional group effort, including CDA, CDOT, IDOT, OATS, CTA & CARE PLUS.

Rossi has completed work on the removal and reconstruction of two bridge piers from the I-190 to the CTA Blue Line with the help of several competent subcontractors. This project was needed because the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) widened the I-190 to provide some congestion relief on the Kennedy Expressway, which directly impacted the structure carrying the Airport Transit System (ATS) Automated Guideway Bridge over the I-190.
Some of the work involved in the project included, but was not limited to:

  • Temporary rerouting of ATS electrical hardware from guideway on to aerial cables over I-190 and CTA.
  • Removal of existing abutment and piers south of I-190.
  • Removal, replacement, or reinstallation of all ties, rails, insulators, negative return, conduit, and appurtenances.
  • Coordination/joint effort with the Chicago Department of Transportation, IDOT, CTA, CDA, O’Hare Airport Transit System, and Siemens.
  • Construction of new abutment, slope wall, concrete faces retaining wall and pier south of I-190.
  • Furnishing and erecting two-span continuous unit steel girders over eastbound I-190 and proposed Balmoral Avenue.
  • Grading and installation of erosion control.
